Art Rat is a memoir in words and photographs, moving between the carefree days and nights of 1990s and 2000s New York and contemporary Tokyo. Over three decades, Jörgen Axelvall’s life unfolds through sex, art, friendship, love, illness, memory and survival. When an HIV diagnosis is followed years later by Stage 4 cancer, certainties begin to unravel. Alongside his partner Ai, he moves between doctors and alternative healers, artists and strangers, hospitals and city streets—sometimes searching for answers, sometimes simply trying to keep going.
Written with candor, dark humor and an eye for the absurd, Art Rat is neither a conventional memoir nor a straightforward photographic book. Prose, photographs, poems and aphorisms form a fragmented, intimate record of a life lived between places, identities, beliefs and realities.
Drawing on a personal photographic archive accumulated over thirty years, Art Rat is ultimately less about illness than about what remains: curiosity, desire, imagination, love—and the stubborn impulse to carry on.
